beyond the touchline at Olney Rugby Club

Club in top mag

Posted by ck on March 25, 2008

Great piece on Olney in this month’s Rugby World magazine. We’re in the club section and the item talks about the potential double promotion of both the mens’ and ladies’ sides.

Hats off to publicity officer Karen Hunter for a job well done!

Sevens Heaven

Posted by ck on March 14, 2008

7sThe Olney Rugby 7s takes place again this year, on 5 July - and all the planning so far indicates it’s gonna be another awesome day.

We now have an official sponsor for the tournament, in the shape of Data-Re - you’ll recall the vibrant pink shirts their team had on last year!  Anyway, the extra support of their sponsorship will mean we can make this year’s event bigger and better.

There’s plans afoot to have more family friendly activities available to entertain the wee ones whilst the parents are in the beer tent - and incidentally, we’re also putting together some evening entertainment this year; so pace yourselves!

On the pitch, we’ve already started receiving entries in from teams eager to compete - the key is to get in early as we are only taking 20 sides again.  Quality not quantity, you see!

New field project gathers pace

Posted by ck on March 10, 2008

The fundraising committee’s now been formed to help us try and secure Doff’s Field.  If it all comes off, this could be the most important development the club has seen in the past 25 years and it would secure the future of Olney RFC for generations to come.

If you’ve not already done so - read more about it here.  And then, think about what you can do to help - everyone needs to get involved in this scheme, it’s not something that the ‘usual suspects’ can do alone, or indeed want to do alone!

So, get behind the club and get involved!

The worst kept secret…

Posted by ck on January 15, 2008

Those of you with an ear to the ground will have heard that the club is likely to be purchasing the land out the back as a permanent pitch/recreation space.  This is phenomenal news for the club and all being well things should progress smoothly. But it will mean some serious fundraising from everyone associated with the club - if we really want to create a fantastic rugby space, we need to put in major efforts to ensure the area is up to the level we want it to be at.

On another note, a current debate is what form the soon to be decided on smoking shelter should be in.  We know we need one (surely the smokers aren’t happy in the rain out the front? It’s like a welcome committee gone horribly wrong) - question is what will it look like, where will it be, and who will ensure people wipe their feet before coming back in the club? eh?

Pink, and proud!

Posted by ck on November 20, 2007

Apparently Olney was featured on BBC Radio Five Live recently, as they had a discussion on sports clubs that wear pink.  Olney were of course high up on the list (except, it’s CERISE) but I hear that Matt Dawson, who was on the show, was quick to give his negative opinion of us.  Typical Daws mouthing off - nothing changes does it?

But, still on the subject of our favourite colour, nice to see the cricket world is catching up with the delights of pink…

Shame on you!

Posted by ck on November 8, 2007

MoneyOnce again the winter draws in and once again, far too many players at Olney are taking the piss by not paying their subs. East Stand hears the Hall of Shame (with pictures this year?) will once again be appearing in the club, naming and shaming those players who can’t be arsed paying a meagre £60 for use of the finest rugby facilities in our area.

Like your clean shirt, hot bath, cold pint, free physio, good coaches and top club?  Then pull your finger out and pay up!

Peed off…

Posted by ck on October 30, 2007

East Stand heard the fall out from the Cambridge 4th team trip was a literal one last Saturday night, as winning try-scorer Lloydy literally couldn’t contain himself.  Post club beer drinking, after a bladder full Lloydy went on later that night to relieve himself. In bed. Where his much better half was innocently sleeping.   Nasty, that.

On a more positive note, the highlight of the 3rds disappointing game against Old Scouts was a sublime chip along the wing from none other than Si Bonner.  The score from the resulting line-out (if East Stand has it right) was pretty good too - just a shame Bon Bon was playing for the opposition…

One night in Cambridge, one night in Cambridge

Posted by ck on October 25, 2007

East Stand sees the 4th team specials are off to Cambridge this Saturday and no doubt there’ll be repetition of the shenanigans that took place last time they were there.  With the troublesome likes of Kemble on board one wonders what state they’ll be in when they reappear…

Great to see a 4th team out again though lads, no doubt you will muller Cambridge, get mullered and keep the reputation of the Olney 4s going…

East Stand looks forward to reporting on the fall-out in due course.

Oh and another thing readers, please feel free to comment on any of these blog entries - the East Stand is not an exclusive site and your banter will only add to the mix!  Just click on comment below….

Plenty of hog, but no pig man

Posted by ck on October 22, 2007

The clubhouse was rammed last Saturday for the RWC final, and with the firsts recording a seriously good win against Grove, the mood was ecstatic! Shame England didn’t lift the cup but to be frank, after a few more ciders no-one really cared.  It was a shame not to see pig-man in his usual seat accompanying Ed’s inane banter but a treat to see three of the boys in Elvis suits, altho Rosco’s outfit was particularly ill fitting around the crotch area - not a good look mate.

Thanks have to go to Alec and his bar team for a really good job, they had a hard old shift, and to the hog roast organisers and volunteers.  Lots of hands to the pumps meant everyone got fed and watered.

Not so lucky were the away teams….East Stand hears there was a glut of rock hard potatoes found dumped in the field behind the club on Sunday morning…

AOB from Dorrill

Posted by ck on October 18, 2007

Once again the voice of Joe Dorrill boomed across the club house - “Who’s turned the bloody ice machine off?”.  Yes readers, you know well the gripes of our much beloved groundsman-cum-oddjob man.  He’s not happy unless there’s something to moan about, is he?

Turns out the offender was one of the ladies’ team who had inadvertently turned the machine off, convinced that switching it off was in fact saving the club money on electricity.  It didn’t save her a verbal mauling from the Dorrill though, and East Stand heard that secretly Joe was pleased to be telling off one of the girls - it gave him the chance to make ruinous lewd comments about what he’d do to her if she ever did it again…
